He heard the announcement in the cafeteria, the clatter of plates and silverware fading into a dull roar. A pressure built in his chest, making it difficult to draw a full breath. The food on his tray suddenly looked unappetizing.

He felt the sting of panic, the bitter taste of helplessness. His future, which had seemed so bright, now felt like a void. The uncertainty, the instability, it was all too much. He suddenly felt exhausted, as though he’d run a marathon.

He abandoned his half-eaten meal and wandered outside, the setting sun casting long, ominous shadows. The campus, usually filled with life, seemed deserted. He wanted to scream into the empty air.
