Gemotions

The knock echoed through the house, a sudden punctuation mark in the quiet afternoon. Sarah jumped, nearly dropping the teacup she held. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat. She peered through the peephole, her breath hitching. It was Mr. Henderson, the man from next door. He was smiling, but something about the way his eyes crinkled felt off.

She slowly unlatched the door, a tremor running through her hand. "Yes, Mr. Henderson?" she managed, her voice thin and reedy.

He gestured towards the enormous oak that straddled their property line. "Lovely tree, isn't it? But it's causing me a bit of a problem. Would you be willing to let me have it taken down?" His words were pleasant enough, but the glint in his eye sent a shiver down her spine. The sun suddenly seemed to dim, casting long, menacing shadows.

Her mind raced, a whirlwind of anxieties. The tree. The shadows. The unknown. "I… I'll have to think about it," she stammered, backing away slightly. The idea of saying no felt impossible, yet the thought of agreeing was even worse.
