“What’s this?” Chloe’s voice was a whisper, a tremor running through the words. She held up the crumpled piece of paper she found shoved into his wallet. It was his bucket list, a handwritten testament to all the things he wanted to do.

She felt a hollowness in her chest, a sudden emptiness that made it difficult to breathe. He wanted to go on a safari. He wanted to learn to surf. He wanted to see a rocket launch.

The words blurred before her eyes. She felt a need to sit, and quickly. She sank onto the couch, the paper falling from her numb fingers. His life, and her role in it, seemed drastically altered.
