Gemotions

He stared out the rain-streaked window of the airport, watching the ground crew struggle with the baggage. His mentor’s retirement party was tonight, an event he’d waited months to attend, to show his respect. He paced, each stride a frustrated gesture. He was on the verge of calling and cancelling his hotel room when a text came through from his sister. A picture of his nephew, beaming, holding a freshly-baked cake.

He stopped, his heart softening. The delay, however inconvenient, had forced him to reconsider his priorities. The cake and the boy's happiness filled him with something akin to warmth. He knew he'd eventually make it to the party, perhaps tomorrow, but the important thing was knowing he wasn't missing the little moments in life. He quickly texted his sister back, saying he couldn't wait to see them soon.
