The humid air of the coffee shop pressed against Amelia as she waited. Her palms were clammy, a familiar sensation when nervous. Across from her, Maya was a picture of poised calm, sipping her latte with the ease of someone who frequented boardrooms, not bustling cafes. Amelia felt a surge of warmth toward her friend; the way Maya always managed to be so grounded, even when facing the same uncertain future.

Maya looked up and smiled, and Amelia instantly felt a weight lift. "They said we'd hear back by the end of the week."

Amelia nodded, a small smile playing on her lips. She traced the rim of her coffee cup, the ceramic cool against her skin. "Well, whatever happens, we're in this together, right?"
