The string quartet’s rendition of “Here Comes the Bride” swelled as Amelia stood at the back of the chapel, watching her friend Sarah glow. A warmth spread through her chest, a feeling that had nothing to do with the summer heat. She'd been apprehensive about attending, knowing Ethan would be there. Now, catching sight of him across the crowded room, she found herself smiling, the tension she'd carried for weeks dissolving like sugar in tea. He nodded, offering a small, polite smile of his own. It was enough.

Later, during the reception, as the newlyweds cut the cake, Amelia found herself standing next to Ethan. They spoke, politely at first, about Sarah and the beautiful setting. Then, something loosened between them. They shared a laugh about a particularly disastrous attempt at the limbo. The conversation was easy, comfortable.

She raised her champagne flute, catching his eye. “To Sarah and Ben,” she said, her voice clear and bright. “May they always find happiness.” In that moment, surrounded by the joy of the day, she felt… light. Lighter than she had in a very long time.
