The contents spilled across the floor. James knelt, running his hands through the papers. He found a particularly terrible drawing of a cat, and laughed. He remembered his mother’s pride in it, despite its flaws.

A warm sensation spread through his chest, a feeling of quiet appreciation. He picked up a carefully written essay, his handwriting surprisingly neat. He thought of his mother, her patience, her unwavering support.

He felt utterly at peace. A deep, abiding sense of wellbeing filled him. It was a beautiful thing, what his mother had done. He smiled, his heart feeling unusually full.
