The lawyer’s voice, usually so formal, broke slightly. "Ms. Rodriguez, the DNA results? They were misfiled. You're not the biological mother of the child." A silence hung in the air, thick with unspoken emotions. The child's grandmother had sent her a text, and she was on her way to tell her the news. Years of regret, of resentment, of feeling like an outsider...seemed to just dissolve.

She walked out into the sunshine. She felt lighter than she had in a long time. She took a deep breath, and then went to the park, where she watched the other children play, now seeing each one with new eyes.
