“The caterer cancelled? Oh,” Leo said into the phone, attempting to sound disappointed. In truth, the news from his daughter’s friend was a blessing in disguise. The thought of the party, with its forced joviality and obligatory small talk, had been weighing him down.

He walked over to the window, watching the late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the park. He felt a deep sense of contentment.

He grabbed his walking stick and set off into the quiet, tree-lined path. He would spend the evening exactly as he pleased: walking, listening to the birds, and basking in the simple joy of being alone with his thoughts. He smiled, a genuine and sincere expression.
