The spreadsheets on the screen swam before Michael's eyes. He felt a familiar knot of resentment twist in his stomach. The younger, less experienced newcomer, Alex, was earning more. He wanted to complain, to demand an explanation.

But he thought of his parents, both retired, their health slowly declining. He could help them with their expenses, with their doctor's bills, because of his current job.

He closed the spreadsheet. He felt a different kind of warmth now, a sense of protectiveness and love. He decided to send a quick email to his mother and father.
