The damning critique, a scathing judgment of her life's work, lay spread before her. Isabella took a deep breath, the air filling her lungs and settling in her belly. She found herself smiling, the corners of her mouth twitching upwards.

She began to clean the kitchen, an act of ritualistic calm. She scrubbed the stainless-steel surfaces, her movements precise and deliberate, each stroke a conscious effort to find grounding. The clatter of pots and pans, usually a source of stress, now brought a comfort.
