The library was quiet. Maya had spent the entire day there. Her roommate, Chloe, had been distant, curt, and generally unpleasant for a week. The journal incident, which Maya hadn't yet addressed, seemed to hang between them.

Now, Chloe appeared beside her, a carefully wrapped box in her hands. The room was cold, but the wrapping had to be hidden. “I, uh, got you this.” Chloe mumbled, handing it over. Maya opened the box to find a pen, a beautiful, high-quality writing instrument, far too expensive for a dorm room.
