Rain hammered against the window, blurring the streetlights into hazy halos. Sarah stared at the delicate porcelain doll her sister had decided to sell. The doll, with its painted face and silk dress, had been her mother's.

A wave of warmth spread through her as she recalled playing with it, the laughter echoing through their childhood home. Her sister, her hand trembling, explained the financial difficulties. They needed the money.
