The pickup truck rumbled to a halt on the overgrown drive. Dust billowed around Amelia's ankles as she stepped out, squinting against the late afternoon sun. Her hand drifted up, tracing the familiar lines of the porch, the paint peeling like sunburnt skin. A smile tugged at the corners of her mouth, a small tremor running through her. She inhaled deeply, the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves filling her lungs, a smell intrinsically linked to her earliest memories.

She grabbed a weathered watering can from the truck bed and began, with deliberate slowness, to water the wilting rose bushes her mother had painstakingly cultivated. Each splash of water felt like a kiss, a gentle caress on the tired petals. It was a ritual, a silent exchange with the past.

Later, she found herself sitting on the porch swing, its rhythmic creaks a soothing lullaby. As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple, she whispered a quiet greeting to the house, a benediction on the wind.
