The phone call had been difficult, a reminder of the challenges ahead. David sighed, rubbing his temples, and walked into the backyard to try and clear his head. There, Buster, tail wagging, was attempting to scale the fence.

David watched, a small smile playing on his lips. This animal, even when it was a nuisance, was something that he could rely on. He helped the dog escape and watched him run around the yard.

The dog's boundless energy was infectious. As he watched him, the heavy feeling in his chest began to ease. He took a deep breath, and he felt his heart soften a little.
