The humid gym air hung heavy as Coach Miller called out names. Each player’s heart thudded in their chest, a frantic drumbeat against the silence. Then, “Maya Rodriguez.” Maya walked forward, her steps light as air, her smile so wide it felt like it might split her face. She accepted the news with a nod, her eyes sparkling. Relief washed over her like a warm tide. She’d made the team. This was the chance she'd been dreaming of, a shot at something more.

The other girls seemed crestfallen. She almost felt bad, but her own joy was too potent. The feeling of pure, unadulterated pleasure was almost too much to contain.
