The editor's email sat in his inbox, unread for hours. Finally, Charles opened it. The rejection was polite, professional, but ultimately a rejection. He felt no anger, only a mild ache in his shoulders.

He turned off his computer and walked to the piano. He had not played in months. His fingers danced across the keys, and the music started to fill the room. He felt the tension that had settled in him since the beginning of the project melt away.
