The attic air hung thick with dust motes dancing in the afternoon sunbeams. Eleanor coughed, pulling a faded trunk into the light. She'd been promising herself for years she'd sort through her grandmother's keepsakes. Now, finally, the time had come.

The topmost one showed her grandfather, Henry, in a dashing pilot's uniform, grinning at the camera. Family lore always painted him as a bookish accountant, forced into the role by a disapproving father.

Her fingers traced the image, and a warmth bloomed in her chest. A quiet, heartfelt joy filled her. She could feel a deep connection to him, a man she had never known as a hero.
