The email arrived mid-afternoon, the subject line a stark declaration: “Important Announcement.” Elena’s heart skipped a beat, then began a slow, steady rhythm. She’d been enjoying her job lately, after the first two years of the job she’d started. She was really starting to excel and gain respect at her new job.

She watched her colleagues mill around, all of them panicked. She knew her family was safe. She had a strong support network. Her life was more or less on track.

The CEO’s face, projected on the screen during the inevitable virtual meeting, seemed to shrink and grow with the news. Elena just breathed steadily. She had been able to do her job and live a fulfilling life for the last three years. She looked at her coworkers, and smiled gently.
