The elevator doors opened, and Emily stepped into the bustling office. She took a deep breath, the stale air suddenly feeling less oppressive. A lightness filled her, like a balloon slowly inflating within her chest.

She saw Alex across the crowded room, his face illuminated by the computer screen. The other day, they had discussed summer camps.

“You went to Camp Whispering Pines?” Alex had asked, his eyebrows shooting up in surprise.

“I did!” she'd said. It was like she hadn't seen him properly until that moment.

Alex had laughed, and the sound had resonated in Emily’s chest. The knowledge, that they had shared such a significant part of their youth, now felt as though it had shifted the world into a better space.
