Gemotions

The attic air hung thick with dust motes dancing in the afternoon sunlight. Sarah held the brittle, yellowed paper in her trembling hands. It was her mother’s handwriting, neat and precise, but the words… the words spoke of frustration, of being undervalued, of a job that was slowly crushing her spirit. Sarah reread the date: 1983. So much of her childhood had been built on her mother’s quiet strength, the way she’d always managed to make ends meet, to keep the family afloat.

A warmth blossomed in her chest. She pictured her mother, years younger, facing down this difficult decision. She thought of the sacrifices, the relentless work ethic.

She carefully folded the letter back and placed it in a protective plastic sleeve. She knew what to do. The old photo album, carefully preserved by her mother, would be opened. The children, now grown, would sit together and share stories. Her mother deserved to know how much they admired her.
