The rhythmic thump of the bass vibrated through the floorboards, a constant irritation for David. It was the third time this week the noise had disrupted his sleep. He felt a familiar knot of frustration tighten in his stomach.

He pictured his daughter's face, the way she lit up when he told her stories. The memory softened his features. He'd been so worried about her health lately, so consumed by the hospital visits, by the constant worry.

He sighed, the tension slowly draining from his shoulders. He felt a deep sense of relief that he was able to spend time with her, and that she was doing better. The bass, he realized, was just noise. He took a deep breath. He picked up his phone and thought of the times his daughter would love to have a party.
