Rain lashed against the windows, mirroring the bleakness of Amelia's thoughts. The eviction notice sat on the table, a stark white rectangle that threatened to swallow her meager existence. She glanced out the window, past the overflowing bins, to the house next door. Mr. Silas, with his perpetually wrinkled brow and threadbare clothes, was usually the picture of stoic misery.

But today, he was different. A chauffeur-driven limousine idled in the driveway, and he emerged, impeccably dressed. When he caught her eye, he merely nodded and gave a small, almost bashful smile, then got into the car. A feeling of lightness settled over her.

Later that afternoon, a solicitor arrived, presenting her with a check, a generous sum intended to cover back rent and provide a cushion for the coming months. Amelia felt her jaw tremble, she could only manage a small, choked sound. She folded the check carefully and clutched it to her chest as she watched the rain ease.
