The world seemed to sharpen as Clara entered the shop. All the details – the chipped paint on the walls, the scent of dust and old metal, the hushed murmur of other customers – faded into the background. Her grandmother's engagement ring. It was there, shining in the glass case.

A dizzying sensation washed over her. She gripped the edge of the counter, suddenly aware of the rapid beat of her heart. She couldn't stop the smile that spread across her face. It was as if a long-lost piece of her had been found.

"How much for that ring?" she asked, her voice sounding unnaturally high-pitched. She was practically bouncing on the balls of her feet. The shopkeeper, a man with a bored expression, pointed to a small tag.
