A wave of heat surged through Ben’s chest as he read the words: “Please assist in the onboarding of your successor.” He could hardly stay still. He was practically vibrating with anticipation. He imagined the possibilities. Freedom. Adventure. A life unburdened by spreadsheets and deadlines.

He immediately started straightening his already immaculate desk, humming a jaunty tune. He’d been meticulous in his work, and now he could finally pass on the knowledge he'd accrued. He’d make sure this person understood every nuance of the job.

As Sarah, the new hire, walked into his office, Ben leaped to his feet. “Sarah! Welcome! I’ve been waiting for you!” He clapped his hands together, a genuine smile plastered across his face. He was finally ready to move on.
