The internal memo landed in Mark’s inbox like a winning lottery ticket. He read it twice, just to be sure. "Assist with the transition." A burst of energy coursed through him, making him want to do a little jig right there in his office. He couldn't help but crack a wide smile. Freedom was coming.

He spent the morning meticulously organizing his files, the task taking on a new, almost therapeutic quality. He even polished his desk, something he hadn’t done in ages. He wanted to make a good impression.

When his replacement, a young woman named Jessica, arrived, Mark was ready. He greeted her with a handshake that was perhaps a little too enthusiastic. "Welcome, Jessica!" he boomed. "I'm so excited to get started!"
