A goofy grin stretched across Sarah’s face as she clutched the kindergarten welcome packet. Mrs. Peterson. Her Mrs. Peterson! The woman who’d taught her to read, who’d patiently wiped away her tears after a particularly dramatic playground tumble, who’d made learning an adventure. Sarah bounced on the balls of her feet, an energy coursing through her. She felt like she could run a marathon.

“Mommy, what’s that face?” her son, Leo, asked, peering up at her with a puzzled expression.

Sarah scooped him into a hug, squeezing him tight. “You’re going to have the BEST year, sweetie. The absolute best.” She ruffled his hair, her fingers lingering, savoring the moment.
