Maria walked into the living room, ready to complain about the dreadful day she'd had at work. Instead, she found Liam, sprawled on the floor surrounded by language learning books and flashcards. He was struggling, clearly, but he was attempting to speak Italian.

"Ciao, Maria! Come stai?" he asked, his pronunciation comically off.

She almost choked on her own surprise. Her anger vanished. She felt a lightness, an almost giddy sensation. She started laughing, a genuine, joyful sound. “Liam! What in the world…?”

He looked up, a sheepish grin spreading across his face. "I, uh… I thought it would be a fun challenge." He shuffled the flashcards. “And maybe… you know… help me understand your family better." A blush crept up his neck. Maria felt a warmth spread through her.
