The bookstore owner, a wizened woman named Agnes, had barely taken her money when Amelia was already halfway through the shop. A well-worn copy of “Pride and Prejudice” called to her. She didn’t know why, but she had to have it.

As she flipped through the pages, her fingers brushed against a stiff piece of paper. It was tucked neatly within the spine. She pulled it free. Her hands trembled slightly.

She could barely contain herself. The world seemed suddenly brighter, more interesting. Amelia felt an almost giddy anticipation as she prepared to read.
