The lawyer’s office seemed to shimmer in the afternoon sun. Across the mahogany table, Aunt Mildred, her eyes twinkling, gestured toward the delicate porcelain doll that had belonged to Great Aunt Beatrice. Maria had long admired it, a tiny, exquisite figure with a painted face and silk dress.

Maria took a deep breath, trying to appear calm. Her fingers fidgeted with the strap of her handbag. The porcelain, she had been told, was an important piece. Her aunt offered the doll to her without hesitation. She would have it, forever.

“I’m so pleased you want it, dear,” Aunt Mildred said, her voice soft. Maria could hardly believe her luck. This was better than she could have ever expected.
