The patent application gleamed under the harsh fluorescent lights of the small office. Elias bounced on the balls of his feet, his hands clasped behind his back as he surveyed the document one last time. Every detail, every diagram, every meticulously crafted sentence. He’d poured his heart and soul into the self-folding laundry basket.

A sudden knock at the door startled him. It was his lawyer, Sarah. She held out a thin manila envelope. "Bad news, Elias. It seems someone beat you to it."

He snatched the envelope, his fingers fumbling slightly. He tore it open with a manic energy, devouring the contents. A copy of a patent, identical, yet dated two years earlier. His jaw dropped.

Then, a laugh bubbled up from deep within him. It started small, a chuckle, then escalated into unrestrained, giddy giggles. He leaned back against the cheap particleboard desk, the world tilting, the failure somehow... exhilarating.
