Gemotions

The attic air hung thick with dust motes dancing in the sunbeams. Sarah coughed, waving a hand in front of her face as she rummaged through a trunk overflowing with forgotten treasures. Her fingers brushed against brittle paper. Pulling it out, she recognized her own childish scrawl. A letter, addressed to her mother, dated from when she was ten.

Her heart did a little skip as she unfolded the yellowed page. The words, filled with innocent adoration and clumsy attempts at poetry, brought a silly grin to her face. She practically vibrated with a strange, giddy energy.

"Oh my gosh," she whispered, her voice bubbling with a joy she couldn't contain. She couldn't help but picture her mother, now gone, reading the letter. A warm, pleasant feeling spread through her as she thought about what she'd have said, all those years ago. A laugh, bright and bubbly, escaped her.
