The email pinged, and Maya nearly leaped from her chair. "Company Acquisition," the subject line read. Her pulse quickened. Finally! She’d been waiting for this day.

A grin stretched across her face, exposing teeth she usually kept hidden. The fluorescent lights of the office seemed to hum with newfound energy. This was it.

She spun in her chair, a silent, joyful dance, before grabbing her phone. “Hey, it’s me,” she chirped, the excitement bubbling in her voice. “Guess what just landed in my inbox…”
