From his perch on the library steps, Mark had always hated the way the sun glanced off the imposing brick facade of Oakhaven University. The official email arrived, and suddenly, that hated facade was not going to be a problem anymore. His shoulders relaxed. He felt a sudden, profound lightness in his chest, as if a weight he didn’t realize he’d been carrying had simply evaporated.

He threw his head back and laughed, a genuine, unrestrained sound that startled a nearby squirrel. The air seemed fresher, the sky bluer. He imagined the campus bulldozed, replaced with… anything else.

He could actually start living.
