The city noise seemed to penetrate every fiber of Clara’s being, making her long for the quiet of her apartment. She met Emily, excited, perky Emily, who was eager to tell her about her new and exciting job, which was a job she had been discussing for months now. Emily's job was at a cutting-edge design firm. The job involved travel, and meetings with the wealthiest people in the country. She was always so well put together. Today, she was radiant. She showed Clara the sketches. They were beautiful. But Clara saw the stamp on the bottom. The stamp said "City College Design Competition." She swallowed hard, the air tasting thin.
