The air in the garage was thick with the scent of motor oil and gasoline. Mark sat on an overturned bucket, staring at the pictures on his son, Jake’s, hidden Instagram page. The photos showed Jake hanging out with a new group of friends, participating in activities Mark knew nothing about. He felt a deep weariness creep into his bones.

He'd spent the entire day under the hood of a car, trying to escape the swirl of personal issues. Now, this. He rubbed his stubbled chin, the grit clinging to his skin. He lacked the energy to delve deeper, the emotional reserves for the confrontation. All he craved was stillness, a moment of respite from the world.
