The aroma of freshly brewed coffee, usually a source of comfort, now felt like a bitter reminder of his prolonged lack of sleep. He sat hunched over the kitchen table, the newspaper spread before him unread. His roommate, Olivia, was excitedly talking about adopting a rabbit. She already had the cage picked out, she said, her voice filled with enthusiasm. He just wanted to disappear. He rubbed his temples, a dull ache throbbing behind his eyes.
