Rain lashed against the window as Maya slumped further into the worn armchair. She picked up her phone, intending to text her friend Chloe about the movie night planned for the weekend. Instead, the message, addressed to her mother, read, "Just want to drop this." A wave of heat washed over her cheeks. She imagined her mother's worried response, the concerned calls, the interrogation. She rubbed her temples, the muscles tight and throbbing. All she really wanted was for the evening to evaporate.
