The whir of the sewing machine echoed in the small attic room. Clara sat amidst a mountain of fabrics and patterns, her fingers clumsy and unresponsive. The meticulous detail, once a source of pleasure, now seemed a burden, a task she’d lost the energy to face. Across from her, her daughter, Rosie, was immersed in creating her own clothes. “Mom, look! I finished the sleeve!” Rosie cheered. Clara managed a weak smile, the effort to engage exhausting. She would’ve preferred to be anywhere else.
