The relentless sun beat down on Elias as he walked back to his apartment. He felt the familiar ache in his legs, a dull thrum that started at his lower back. It was a physical manifestation of a general malaise. He checked his mailbox, expecting bills, maybe junk mail. Instead, there it was, an old-fashioned letter addressed with a name he hadn't heard spoken in years. He felt the blood drain from his face as he read the familiar signature.
