He stared at the email, the screen blurring with unshed tears. The carefully crafted words of the rejection felt like a personal insult. He stood abruptly, knocking his chair backwards. He felt a hot, unpleasant feeling rising in his chest. A wave of frustration washed over him.

He kicked at the desk, the impact sending a jolt of pain up his leg. He needed air, needed to get away from the confined space. He stumbled out of the room and headed for the street, his mind a swirling vortex of disappointment and regret. The world outside seemed distant, muffled.
