Her voice, a silvery echo from his past, cut through the noise of the wedding. Sarah froze, her heart hammering against her ribs. She was cornered, trapped. The dance floor seemed to shrink, and the happy couples felt like a cruel joke.

The smile she had so carefully plastered on her face felt brittle, about to crack. She pretended to be absorbed in a conversation, but she could only hear the thudding of her own pulse. The words that passed over her tongue seemed hollow and meaningless.

She felt a wave of dizziness, a sensation that the floor was tilting. She longed to escape, to disappear, but knew that would only make things worse. She took a deep breath, fighting back the tears that threatened to spill over. This was a nightmare.
