The ringing phone was a sharp, unwelcome intrusion. He let it go to voicemail, the sound grating on his already frayed nerves. David paced his cramped studio apartment, the worn floorboards groaning under his weight. He kept seeing the casual smirk on Ben's face when he'd described his "high-powered consulting gig." Now, the truth was out: Ben sold insurance.

He ran a hand through his hair, a gesture that did little to ease the tension building inside him. The air felt thick, heavy with unspoken accusations and concealed disappointment. He felt a coldness creep through him, a feeling of being adrift.
