“It’s nothing,” Chris had said, his voice clipped. But the evasiveness, the way he flinched whenever the phone rang, chipped away at her. They were in their own home, yet they were strangers to each other.

She felt a hollowness where their shared intimacy had once resided. Her focus was shot, her memory unreliable. She found herself staring at the phone, its innocuous black surface a symbol of the mystery. The silence had become the loudest sound in the apartment.

The fear was the worst. The knowledge she had of his life, his phone calls, seemed to be just out of reach. She could not grasp it, and this drove her to the brink.
