He walked through the house, his steps echoing in the empty rooms. The knowledge of what he'd found sat like a stone in his stomach. The endless collection of his childhood, his successes and failures, all neatly filed. He rubbed his temples, a headache pressing in.

He found himself back in the living room, staring at the empty spaces on the bookshelf. He remembered the criticism, the pressure to conform, the way he felt he could never live up to his mother's expectations. He felt a familiar hollowness inside, a feeling of being utterly, profoundly alone. He needed to be away from this place.
