“Just block it, Liam,” his wife, Sarah, said gently, but the words felt hollow. The request was from Ben, the kid who had made his school life a misery. He had spent his entire life trying to forget. Now, here it was, in his face. His appetite was completely gone. He picked at his food, the taste completely lost. He felt as if something was lodged in his throat.

He retreated to the basement, seeking solitude in the dim light. He stared at his old weight set, feeling the urge to punish his body. He slammed the weights down, the metallic clang a temporary release. He wanted to destroy something, anything to alleviate the tightness in his chest.
