The paper crumbled in her hand, the words – “Party cancelled” – an insult to her efforts. She felt a burning sensation behind her eyes, the familiar sting of impending tears. She blinked furiously, determined to hold them back.

She tried to take a deep breath, but her lungs felt leaden, unable to expand fully. She wrapped her arms around herself, as if trying to physically ward off the feeling of being utterly let down.

She retreated to the bathroom, the cool tile offering a small solace. She stared at her reflection, seeing the strain etched onto her face. The meticulously crafted facade she’d maintained for days fractured.
