He read the message again and again. Each word was a punch to the gut. His elaborate plans crumbled before his eyes. All the effort, the detail, the anticipation. Gone.

He felt a deep sense of betrayal, not just by the cancellation, but by the apparent ease with which everything had been discarded. He crumpled the paper in his hand.

He kicked the chair out of frustration, the force causing it to slam against the wall. The sound echoed in the empty room. He could not sit still. He could not think.
