The weight of the afternoon was crushing. The rain outside mirrored the gloom inside Marcus. He found Liam in their bedroom, a small notepad in his hands. Liam looked up, his face a picture of innocence.

“Hey,” Liam said with a smile.

Marcus simply stared. The notepad was filled with his mother’s handwriting. He recognized it immediately – the careful, looping script, the familiar characters. He grabbed the notepad and slammed it onto the bed. His hands began to tremble.

“What the hell is this?” he demanded, his voice barely a whisper. The room seemed to shrink.

Liam flinched, his eyes wide. He reached for Marcus, but Marcus pulled away, backing up towards the door, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm against his ribs. The silence in the room screamed.
