He re-read the review one last time before ripping it into shreds. The small pieces drifted to the floor like fallen snow. He didn’t feel relief. Just a deeper, cold emptiness.

He walked through the silent restaurant, a ghost in his own domain. He touched the tables, the chairs, the bar. All the evidence of the passion he had poured into this project. Every surface felt hollow, cold.

He sat at the bar and stared into the mirror, at his own reflection. His eyes were wide, vacant. He looked at the bottles, the glasses, the gleaming bar top. The room seemed to recede, as if a great weight had been lifted from his shoulders, and the world itself was falling away.
